About Us
Pursuant to the District of Columbia Non-Profit Corporation Act, a small group of former students of Caribbean Union College adopted articles of incorporation, which they filed on Tuesday, June 27, 1967, marking the birth of Caribbean Union College Alumni Association, Washington, D.C.
Three persons were named to serve as initial directors until the first annual meeting when eight directors would be elected. These were Ralph Leon Parris, Carlton Joseph Springer, and Nita Alma Roline Clements, with Ralph Parris serving as the president.
Subsequently, the first set of by-laws were adopted at a regular meeting held on Saturday evening, February 24, 1968, attested to by Yvonne Roberts, the association’s first secretary.
The next significant milestone in the history of the Alumni Association came in 1973.
Forty six alumni and friends joined with thirteen alumni and friends of our sister institution, West Indies College, to form a new church congregation in Hyattsville, Maryland, which they named Metropolitan Seventh-day Adventist Church. Approximately 50 persons with the vision to construct a church edifice to accommodate 500!
Today, two of the three initial board members reside in Maryland and Trinidad & Tobago. Sadly, Ms. Clements passed away in Florida in December 2018. However, membership at Metropolitan SDA Church peaked at 1100; and on occasions prior to COVID-19 restrictions, two worship services were held to accommodate congregants.
When Caribbean Union College achieved university status in 2006 and became University of the Southern Caribbean, our name changed accordingly. We currently operate under the umbrella of the University of the Southern Caribbean Alumni Association, North America, and continue to raise funds yearly for our flagship project—the Scholarship Fund—administered by USCAA North America.
Our stated purpose is to promote, encourage and maintain intercultural relations between students and alumni of the University of the Southern Caribbean, Port of Spain, Trinidad, and the University of the Southern Caribbean Alumni Association, Washington, D.C., by means of exhibitions, scholarships, forums, and other appropriate visual and auditory educational techniques.
Our Alma Mater’s motto is “Beyond Excellence” for which we strive, remaining ever loyal to our “grand old school”!
Mission Statement
We are committed to promoting, encouraging, and maintaining intercultural relations between our organization and students and alumni of the University of the Southern Caribbean in the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. We propose to accomplish this by means of exhibitions, scholarships, forums, and presentations utilizing various visual, auditory, or other appropriate techniques.
President’s Message
January 2021
Greetings Fellow Alumni,
It is a pleasure to greet you as the newly elected president of the USC Alumni Association Chapter of Washington DC. I am grateful (and humbled) for the honor and privilege of leading this fine association and for your confidence in assigning me this task. God is our true leader and I count it all joy to be in His service. I have a great team of officers (an excellent supporting cast) and we look forward to working closely with all USC alumni and friends in the DC metro area, and beyond. We welcome your feedback on all issues.
I believe that a fully engaged prayerful and financially supportive membership is critical to our success. Thanks to all of you who have given so generously (time, financial resources, and skills) over the past years. Throughout 2021, we will be engaging you in a few targeted activities, beginning with the April 16th fundraiser at our April 17th Alumni weekend event. This would be followed by a summer and a year-end event. These activities will assist us in achieving our association’s main objective; which is to support our Alma Mater (USC/CUC). We are committed to working and thinking in a more creative style outside the status quo. I would be remiss if I did not thank the past presidents, officers, and members of this fine association. We look forward to your continued support as we forge ahead in these strange, exciting, and uncertain times. May God bless all of us and may his blessings rest in a marked way on this association.
With kind regards,
Elizabeth Greenidge Phillips

Your Opportunity to Contribute
Fellow Alumni and Friends,
Greetings! We may not be able to control what’s going on around us but we can certainly control how we respond to it. We need to remember each other in our prayers.
While the world has been rapidly changing, our dear alma mater has been struggling to cope with the virus, to function as an educational institutional, and accommodate the needs of its 2,700 students.
Due to no fault of our own, we have fallen behind in our commitment to raising funds for scholarships, and many students depend on this assistance to complete their education. We have all been distracted during the past year, dealing with our own survival. However, God has still been good to us; and the time has come for us to renew our commitment to support our Alumni Association and its goals for 2021.
